It’ s not a secret that Budapest has quite good designers in its fashion portfolio, where some of them have already achieved  a worldwide success. But each year fashion schools introduce new graduates, who are looking for the opportunity to showcase their designs. Being unknown on the market and having no capital to invest, does not make it easier. However the recently opened concept store – WeSign can provide some light at the end of the tunnel for young or budding designers.

This little  store is a place where creativity merge.  You can not only find their  limited collection of unique clothes but also amazing handmade bags, backpacks and really admirable jewellery.  Worth to mention, that more and more fashion brands are expanding their offers for home interiors and  accessories,  and WeSign follows the same path.  Apart from clothes and jewelry, you can find  beautiful ceramics, paintings and artful stationary, where  all of them  coexist in  unity. Some days ago I met Balázs who is one of the initiators and owners  of this place. We had a very meaningful conversation about the role of suitability in our modern world, young designers and ways we can help them to display their collections, and soulful collaborations between designers from different fields.

WeSign – a newly opened concept store has a quite interesting portfolio. Could you please tell me more about the mission of this place?

Balázs:  The mission is to give an opportunity to young designers to introduce themselves and physically give them a place where people can meet their products. Usually the main problem  for a starter brand is that it ‘s not enough to open an online store because customers need to see and feel the product, especially when it is not cheap. And because it is all unique design stuff, it is not. So first of all we want this to become a design showroom where you can always find something new. Second of all, as we grow and become a brand  we can lift up other small (unknown) designers to also become one.

You collaborate mainly with beginners, what is the selection process?
Balázs: First we put ads on to some Facebook collection sites that we are open for different shelf renters. We asked for pictures, web or FB addresses from everyone who applied so as to be able to check their work. We are 4 of us as owners so the democratic decision is won by 3 votes.  We decide mainly, by the type and photographs of the products. After that we meet the applicant and if we think we can work together we start to do it. Only two things can lock out one. The first if we judge that the quality is not good enough. The second if we presume that we would make a rival for one of our products which is already in.
You also pay a lot of attention to sustainability, what is the production process of a particular item ?
Balázs: Unfortunately until now we have just one product which really is about sustainability. ‘In hand’ brand collects its basic (already made) clothes made from 100% bio organic cotton (t-shirts, baby clothes) from developing countries produced by local brands having international certificate (GOTS – Global Organic Textile Sandard, Oeko-Tex, Ecocert – Organic 100 Content Standard, BSCI etc.) which not only concerns the product made but also the process of fabrication. The graphics are done by a Hungarian graphic designer  but the topic always has to be about environment, sustainability. Above all just to make it really helping they offer 10% of their income to an organization every year which can be connected with the actual topic.
The store itself can do only some small things. We reduced using stuff like plastic bags and we don’t eat fast food regularly and do not ask for take away (to create avoidable garbage) and of course we collect litter selectively.

What type of clothes/accessories we can find in your store and to whom they are mostly addressed?
Balázs: There are clothes, bags, accessories, jewellery – almost everything. I could say you could totally dress up here but that is not our goal. We have so special items from different kind of things, so I would rather recommend people to visit us for only one or two very unique pieces which nowhere else can be bought. We address our store to everyone interested – in Hungarian starter (not necessarily young) designers.

In my view,  WeSign  has its own mission.  This 25 m sq store is a shelter for young designers, a creative space where different artists  can cooperate with each other, and sustainability is one of the key elements of their statement. I strongly recommend you to pop up to this store, if you are looking for hand made products with original design.
