Have you ever heard a term speakeasy?

It refers to the hidden spots to get a drink during the Prohibition in the 1920s. Today’s Speakeasy are often small and almost impossible to find bars with an intimate crowd and a good time to be had for all. I think nowadays this term is also a bit overused, as many so-called “speakeasy bars” have a website where you can find the address and alcohol is not prohibited anymore.

The only place, which I could  call a real ‘speakeasy’ bar was a warehouse somewhere in Bushiwck in NYC  back in  2007, where you truly needed to know someone who was involved and could take you there. Alcohol was sold illegally and you could get there any type of drugs as well (not that I am promoting them, just saying) . Overall it was a great artistic space with delightful music. Parties were organized once per month, no line ups, just a location hint. You could expect literally anything. I will never forget a group of naked people, wearing colorful masks and dancing in the middle of the room. No idea from where they came and where they were heading.

Recently I have visited few hidden places (so-called speakeasy bars) in Warsaw.  Finding them was actually not so easy, even if you got an address and location was in the city center.

Weles is a hidden cocktail bar in the city center, however it takes you some time to figure out where is actually the entrance. The street number – Nowogrodzka 11 says nothing.  Let’s say that the cocktail menu should rule the roost, however it was an interior of this place which made me speechless. Absolutely stunning marble counters with ultra sophisticated long chairs and couches plus custom-made, crystal chandelier. This was enough for me to become a frequent guest of this place (whenever I will be in Warsaw again). Comfortable and sophisticated seats and this small stream of light give you a sort of excitement and the feeling of unknown.

Another place, where  I have been taken by my friends was 6 cocktails. Also in the city center (Mokotowska street) but I can already wish you a good luck with finding the door. It’s located in a historical apartment house but which floor, well I don’t even remember. Definitely you won’t find any sign but you can call this place and if you will be lucky you will get the full address. It’s really cozy place, looks a bit like a private apartment but have very decent selection of alcohols. Drinks taste there like heaven. I got something which should improve my poor health (cold season, you know). I felt like new-born the next day.

This place has definitely laid back atmosphere, interior is rather modern but has some glamorous elements. It’s really nice to spend some evening there with your friends. You can be sure that you won’t find there any random people, rather the ones who appreciate a good ambience and of course perfect cocktails! Bartender who was serving our drinks was ultra nice and had a great sense of humour. And this is always a plus!

I will be updating you with more bars like this. Looks like 2018 will be the year full of travels, so stay tuned!
