The Spoiled Queen

The Basque Wardrobe

Ten days along nearly the whole coastline, and the thing I couldn't stop thinking about was the clothes. One outfit for him, one for her, pulled from what's actually on the racks in Bilbao, the small coastal towns, and San Sebastián.

Mood one — For him, for her

The Edge

Bilbao fashion reminds me of Scandinavian style, actually — oversized, architectural, muted colors with maybe one strong piece thrown in.

The Coast

Between Bilbao and San Sebastián is a string of small towns where the weather decides everything — good fabric, water and windproof, washed-out color, a wardrobe shaped by surf culture more than any trend report.

La Belle

San Sebastián is the most naturally elegant place I've shopped in Spain — pijo in the best sense. This is the city that gave Balenciaga his start, and you can still feel it: immaculate coats, beautiful knitwear, tailoring so good you forget someone had to cut it that precisely.
